The Roanoke Valley MS Support Group: A Rescued and Thriving Community in the Roanoke Valley
While the Roanoke Valley MS Support Group has a history spanning approximately 30 years, its current iteration and strong presence began in 2013. Faced with the possibility of dissolving, the group was revitalized with a new vision to serve individuals living with multiple sclerosis in Roanoke, Virginia, and its surrounding areas. They meet on the fourth Thursday of each month.
The primary goal in this new chapter was to not only preserve a vital support resource for the region but to also create a different kind of group – one that is independent and focused on empowering its members. This empowerment comes through education about MS, fostering strong social connections, and encouraging an active lifestyle. The group also aimed to raise awareness about MS in the local community, involve local medical providers, and equip members to be active participants in their own healthcare.
What makes the Roanoke Valley MS Support Group remarkable is its resilience and the collective effort of its members. Having overcome challenges such as attempted takeovers, financial limitations, rapid growth, and the complexities of the COVID-19 pandemic, the group has not only survived but thrived. Its growth even led to the formation of a daytime support option, now known as the MSAV Online MS Support Group, to better accommodate the diverse needs of the community. This vibrant group stands as a testament to the power of shared experience and mutual support in navigating life with MS.
