Ken Shafer Memorial Scholarship

The Multiple Sclerosis Alliance of Virginia is announcing the Ken Shafer Memorial Scholarship in the amount of $1,000 to a local high school senior to be used for tuition assistance.  This scholarship will be provided to a local student planning to enroll at either a college, community college, university or technical school in any field of study.  We encourage any graduating senior who fits the eligibility requirements to apply.

To enter and qualify, the applicant must submit a 300-500-word essay addressing the question: “How do you think having Multiple Sclerosis would affect a person’s college experience?”  Attached with the essay, please include the application, and one letter of recommendation from members of the school administration and/or teachers and one non family personal reference letter.  Most weight will be placed on applicants essay submission and community involvement with academic standing, personal achievement, and letters of recommendation being considered as well.

Scholarship applications are due by May 2nd at 5:00 pm.  The winner and two honorary mentions will be notified no later than May 16th.  A formal announcement will be made at the Annual Ken Shafer Multiple Sclerosis Bowl-a-thon. Check the upcoming events for a time and location.

To complete your online application, you will still need to email or mail the following documents:

1. Most current transcript of grades available (unofficial is fine)
2. Two letters of recommendation, one academic and one personal (non family
3. Essay can be submitted online or as a separate document
